Our children go outside daily for at least 30 minutes on our beautiful balcony where they can explore sand, water, construction and other play equipment. We also usually finish our week with active play on the shared playground downstairs on Fridays.
We host weekly assemblies where our whole school comes together to learn about special celebrations/ events, or to explore one of our seven virtues; cooperation, resilience, compassion, respect, inquiry play, communication and adaptability.
We orgranise other special activities throughout the year (on and off campus) including sports day, Christmas concert, visits from authors, outings to the theatre and occasional trips to the beach or park.
CAN I MOVE MY CHILD'S NAP TIME? Depending on your child's age and appropriate sleep needs this can certainly be done. I'd encourage you to determine their wake window first to ensure this is covered before shifting their schedule. Also understanding your child's total day time sleep needs can help to ensure they are getting enough sleep during the day. If this need isn't covered, you may come across difficulties with night time sleep.
WHAT HAPPENS IF MY CHILD'S AFTERNOON NAP NEEDS TO BE SHORTER FOR SCHOOL? This would again depend on your child's age and their unique sleep needs, however sometimes we can shift bedtime earlier to cover lost day time sleep.
UNTIL WHAT AGE DO CHILDREN NAP IN THE AFTERNOONS? Most children will keep their daytime nap until they are 3 - 3.5 years old. However it it not uncommon for some children to continue their nap beyond this time. I'd recommend offering 'quiet time' in the middle of the day if you have a child whom has dropped their nap to help them take a break and avoid over tiredness.
WHAT'S AN EXAMPLE OF A DAYTIME SLEEP SCHEDULE FOR A CHILD AT PRESCHOOL FROM 1:15 - 4:15PM? Assuming your child is on a 1 nap schedule and over 2 years old then a nap time of 11:15am - 12:45pm would still give them a 1.5 hour sleep. It is important to ensure they have their lunch prior to this nap so that they do not wake during this time due to hunger. Often a 'split lunch' works well on this schedule where they have a half before nap and the other half as a 'snack' when they wake. I'd recommend bringing bedtime earlier for a child on this schedule so avoid the gap being too long between nap and bedtime.
We recommend speaking directly to Gemma if you need any further advice or hep with your child's sleep.
